The graphics themselves are sub-par for its time, featuring an incoherence of both 3D polygonal models and 2D sprite-based objects. This in turn highlights depth perception issues, which isn’t helped by the presence of platforming sections. The jump itself is especially problematic due to its floatiness with respect to forward movement. This issue only adds to the frustration from the controls, which despite offering a few presets, are difficult to adapt and sometimes unresponsive. Occasionally, the view changes angles, usually for an upcoming sequence however the angles are always uncomfortable. The isometric view is unappealing due to a combined awkward angle and being zoomed in too close. However, the delivery of this motif falls very short. ![]() The general gameplay of the series is retained, featuring a battle against aliens spread out across several run-n-gun stages, including bosses, using a variety of weapons. Appaloosa Interactive is generally credited with the low point of the series.ĭespite the venture into 3D, Contra: Legacy of War is very underwhelming. Additionally, it is the first standalone entry that was not developed by Konami, which also did not instill confidence in Contra being handled by outside developers. If this was considered an experiment, Appaloosa did not learn from their mistakes.Ĭontra: Legacy of War is the first 32-bit entry and also the first Contra title to attempt a full 3D perspective for gameplay. Unfortunately, the execution was much less than stellar and strengthened the notion among fans about the series’ incompatibility with working in three dimensions. Konami put Hungarian developer Appaloosa Interactive to the task of making this transition for Contra, resulting in Contra: Legacy of War. However, if executed properly enough, a three-dimensional entry could have succeeded or at least have been considered a serviceable experiment for an idea that could then be avoided. By 1996, there had been 9 years of side-scrolling entries in the series that left a lasting impression. In the onset of the transition to 3D gaming through systems such as the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo 64, it seemed like the Contra series following suit would be the natural next step.
